Another one of those posts.

Thought I should Re-rendered the character guy. Experimenting with Zbrush's rendering and I am loving it.

Hi-poly model asset made in Maya and rendered in Zbrush for a project. Its use was to be a tiling texture that was to be baked onto a plane and used as a coffered ceiling or really anything that the scene would allow.  These sculpted assets are for an environment I worked on called The Cafe based off of Lynn Chen concept piece. Check out her artsation, it's filled with goodies. I explored her concept because I liked her style but wanted to do a little bit more exploring and style mashing.

Will be posting more images as the clock ticks. Thanks for looking.

Some ole fun

So I haven't been able to post recently (just been to damn busy) and I thought after this weekend has happened I really should do some updating. It's getting to that time of the semester where the water level has already risen above eye level and you are just trying to find pockets of air to breath. In light of that I was playing around one day and made this. It's not totally finished. Still got some work to do. (And man do I have some post on process to show for some other things, as well.) But I'd thought I should just give alittle taste of whats been moving my way.

Its been a minute eh?

Its been awhile and man its been a busy summer. Finalizing the idea and the concept to bring it into a reality is a big step. Having all the pieces and just figuring out how to put it on the board is where my summer has been but I've been to busy to sit down and enjoy doing a good ole fashion painting. This is not finished but in the early days of its infancy. I did a painting then threw it into photo shop to see what needed correcting. This is more of a WIP post then a finished post. Enjoy!

I havent posted in alil bit

I've been busy lately and well I haven't had time to really post or paint anything to this blog. So in the spirit of fun I decided to paint something. I found some textures from cg-textures, threw it into Photoshop and based off those the shapes I started to make out something. This was roughly about 1 1/2 hours but I'm going to go further with it.

Silhouette #2

So I've been working on several different concepts in different poses for the character I had last time. I'm currently working on about 5 others at the same time right now and it's coming along well. Everything is starting to the basic silhouette of the character. Now comes the detail phase and working on trying to get it model and looking good. But that is down the road from now, and hopefully not to far down the road. However this is what I have to show at the moment.

So with these 3 I was trying to find the character. What I learned from this was that foreshortening does not work well with silhouettes. I slowly started to morph him out of the position he was in and started moving him into an action pose but still keeping, or attempting to keep the silhouette my friend, but add more action and characteristic into the pose.

Now these 3 started to me to show more of the previous style while showing the characters almost cautiousness. I started to fix and address some p…

More of the same

So here is what I've been working on so far. As of right now I feel like I should take at least a 2 day break on this so that when I come back to it I can come at it with fresh eyes. But here is what I got.

I mostly think like this digital painting is finished, however, I feel like there is probably one or two more things that are missing from the overall piece that I want to play with in the next couple of days. But I am pleased with the "final" design of the piece.
Now I  just need to come up with a title.
That works.

Haven't been able to blog recently, on-top of not having anything to paint or draw on for about 2 weeks. Got to do some doodling last week but having nothing to help document it with. Finally got the chance to do so on Monday and haven't looked back since. Decided to post some of my process for my on-going project this summer (on-top of 5 other different things). The underlying sketch is a silhouette my friend did for me. I took it into photoshop to show him more of what I wanted and started playing around with the character shape. Started doing more of a piece instead of just a quick study for my friend. Will post more as I explore more into this character.

Postin the progress

Some progress on the paintings I posted before.

Working on it

The last piece I've been working on is a lot bigger then the rest of them. I am in the process of painting it out on wood, which is my first time that I can recall of me painting on wood and I am loving the texture it gives off. It's this rich bump that weave that show through the gesso. Makes me want to start painting more on wood. However,  I started last night and I am working towards finishing by at least Wednesday next week.

I can't wait till this is done, I'm liking where it is going and having fun painting this, with the ability to explore the unknown territory of the wood canvas.

2 Paintings

These two paintings are the last of 4 (I'm thinking I got 2 more to paint, gonna be like 30" by 40" or something big like that instead of these smaller ones) in the series, and well my own exploration, I will be adhering them to wood so my narrative is also added to the whole theme of the paintings. The one to the right is from the color study that I posted a couple of days ago. It's still a wip in my opinion but it is close to done, just got to put a few finishing touches to it.

The one on the right is also pretty much done. This has 2 things that I wanted to tie into it. It was inspired by a song called Five Minutes by 431 which I'll be posting a progression video/ time lapse of me painting. What's cool is that I mixed the second with the feelings of the the world of my series so it can consist in the same realm and story. So I picked up on the two feelings of the song and the series and just mashed them together. I hope you enjoy!

Color Study for painting

Title says all. Quick thumbnail of a painting I did last night, just testing it in photoshop to see if I wanted to bring the yellow down. Will post painting tomorrow, however, here is the color wip test!

New thangs

Some new paintings I have done for my series and my own exploration. Having fun with these and loving the results.

I've got about 5 more to do. The rest of the paintings are not totally finished but they are on there way to being done. Will post more when I am finished. If you like any please feel free to contact me! Enjoy!

GDC Notes: Properties of atmospheric games

Properties of atmospheric games
Tonal cohesion
Internal consistency nothing to due with realism
Specific detail

Meteoric prime
MGS4 snake struggle crawl

Atmosphere: in order to work at all needs to be order
Atmosphere is its unique feel
Games that create this type of tone and create assets that work around this tone
Atmosphere have no fidelity requirement

Theme central idea of work
Tone authors attitude towards the theme
Atmosphere: theme+ tone

People were always getting ready for tomorrow..
For a thousand years they haves ruled. Yet now, there are only ten...

Why it matters
Atmosphere should fit with everything else in the game
Sometimes fun needs to take a back seat to atmosphere
It can give you a cohesive experience
The pieces dont fit together okay it fits perfectly. That's what atmosphere should do
Can create the impression that the game is better than it really is.
Atmosphere builds investment into the player

GDC Notes: Level Design

Level design case studies
Cut the rope

The goals in level design
Make player feel smart
Appeal both to causal and advanced player
Keep players hungry for more
-Positive reinforcement
-Self manageable difficulty
-enable planning (not trail and error)
-the solution of the level should look logical, elegant and reproducible
-Level design shouldn't uncover the weakness of the game/engine
-tutorial level shouldn't be passable without using the principle it explains
-it's ok to break those rules

For level designers the important thing is fail rate and skip rate
Player wants more

Gdc was awesome as well as San Fransisco. It was nice to see people, teachers, and friends loose up and enjoy the moment of being somewhere else. Not having to worry about work or school but just to learn and enjoy the possibilities of video games, and what they can be with like minded individuals. I had fun this week and of course will miss the city by the bay. I will post the notes I took on some of the talks I went to, but right now I'm just reminiscing. Sitting in the airport I saw a quote by Walter Cronkite and it hasn't hit me till now, getting ready to leave. The Quote reads, "Leaving San Francisco is like saying goodbye to an old sweetheart. You want to linger as long as possible."

I'll be back next year.

So while I was bored rendering I decided to paint a little. It is going to be a very long night. Getting ready for gdc. San Fran is only a couple of hours away. Cannot Wait.

So I am creating a environment for GDC...which happens to be next week( Woot!). Since I only have one environment, space Egypt, I decided to have another one so I could have at least 2 pieces to show. So I got inspired by a concept painting by Mark Molnar. It has been fun so far instead of having to make characters I am getting to make a world.
School wise, we are making a side-scroller( aka a platformer I.e Mario or Sonic) in game design. We are in the testing phase for our mechanics. So as soon as GDC passes I will post some of the other things that I've been working on. As for now here is the wip. Got a little carried away in maya...but who cares I am having fun

New one

So this is an idea I just tired of making my character for 3d class (yes at 4 in the morning) I decided to paint something and well....this is what I got. I did this in Photoshop since I am no where near acrylic and a piece of paper. Has nothing to do with my fine arts class, it's just my mind wondering. However I will take this and expand upon it making it an acrylic painting. I guess this is just a study for a much bigger piece. A "thumbnail." Will post the sketch I did in my sketchbook which this ties in too the more that I think about it. Will post the evolution of these pieces and the potential for a New Series within the style of my semi-new series! Enjoy Folks.

Works in Progress

So I got a couple of new pieces for my process uploads. All these are about 5"x17. The square one is 9x12". Keeping the Saturated color schemes with the colorly expressive feel going on. I really enjoy this series and hope to take them further. Will continue to post the process of these. Hope you guys enjoy!
